ACE vs ACSM

by Doreen
(Massachusetts)

I am going to obtain my personal trainer certification and I have narrowed it down to ACE and ACSM. I will be doing the self study method. ACE seems like the best fit for me right now but I wonder if that certification does not hold as much weight as the ACSM certification. I live and will be working in the Northeast. I dont think that certifications are geographically specific but I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to which one of these you think might be certification to obtain. Thank you.

I think ACE is the best option to start because it covers a lot of the basics in Exercise Science(Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, Testing ...etc).

ACSM is a better certification but If you dont know anything about Exercise Science will have a really hard time with your self-study.

Ace vs ACSM

ACSM or NSCA is the way to go when considering a certification. NASM is also good but it lacks the research to back up their guidelines and techniques. ACSM is where it all started and NSCA soon followed as they were the first two organizations created to scientifically research health and fitness topics as well as develop professional guidelines for the industry. Cardiac rehab centers adhere to the ACSM guidelines. All their research is done by MD's and PHD's and therefore give you the best professional guidelines available. The Certs are tough though, so study up!
