ACSM Certified Personal Trainer is the "Gold Standard"

by Ronnie
(Washington, DC)

I'm a ACSM-CPT. ACSM is the standard for physical fitness. Practically all of the other certs (NSCA, ACE, NASM, NSCF etc.) reference ACSM material and publications. For example "ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription" is the standard for testing and prescription in the industry. All of ACSM's training protocols are based on scientific evidence and years of evaluated results (Since 1954).

If you don't have a AA or BS degree in exercise science. I think ACSM is a great choice.

By the way, I did purchase the CPT training materials here at this site when I was studying for the exam. I found the material helpful as part of an overall study plan.

ACSM The Gold Standard
by: Dr. Anthony Abbott

I would just like to say "Amen" to this posting; for ACSM truly is the Gold Standard. However, this accolade must also be shared with NSCA; for the first accredited personal trainer certification was awarded to NSCA at a time when the standards for accreditation were more stringent than they currently are. As an exercise physiologist and one who is retained as an expert witness in injury and death cases, I have taken the different personal trainer certifications in order to speak knowledgeably about them in court. With twenty years of experience working with bona fide (PhD) psychometricians, professional exam developers, I can attest to the fact that there is a big difference between ACSM and NSCA personal trainer exams and those developed by other associations. In truth, the personal trainer exams developed by ACSM and NSCA stand head and shoulders above the others because of their ability to more effectively determine the depth of a candidate's knowledge base and, therefore, discriminate between the qualified and unqualified. If one wishes to be recognized as a professional personal trainer, he or she should consider becoming certified by either or both of these organizations that are the only two, truly, non-profit professional associations with credible standards.
