The AFAA personal trainer courses supply enough preparation for the exam. I over prepared and I studied the wrong details before the workshop. The workshop totally prepared me. Yes i had to go home and study what I learned that day but other than that it totally prepares you.

AFAA prepares you better

I agree. I have both AFAA and ACSM H/FI certifications. After attending the workshop for both, I felt totally prepared to take the AFAA exam, but still spent weeks studying for ACSM. The ACSM review book is designed to prepare people for all their certifications. During the ACSM workshop, the presenters were just random personal trainers who each covered a different topic. They even left out two sections because they couldn't find a presenter who knew the information well enough. AFAA presenters are trained specifically to present the information directly from their text. Their information is based on ACSM guidelines for exercise programming. The AFAA experience definitely helped me better prepare for the ACSM exam than attending the ACSM workshop!! I felt I wasted a ton of money on ACSM. AFAA was the better value of the two.
