Best Cert for Certain Criteria

by Kelly
(Tennessee)

okay, i understand that there are valid opinions out there that no one cert is better than another, in and of themselves.

but what if you know what you want to do? for example, i'm just starting out, never been certified (nor have i ever worked as a personal trainer), i want to start my (hopefully) long-term career working at a gym/health club/spa/whatever for a year or two, then start up my own business. i'm not particularly interested in specializing with a certain type of clientele at this juncture.

can someone out there take these specifics into consideration and recommend a cert or two that would be best for someone with these specifics?

Here's a Long Story
by: Sara

I recently graduated from college with a BS in psychology. We had to take a large amount of free electives and I took nearly all of mine in exercise science courses. One course that was offered was "Lifetime Health and Fitness," that was designed to be a preparatory course for the NCSF-CPT certification exam. The class was a complete joke and was taught by a coach who had no personal training experience or certifications of her own; the only resemblance the course had to NCSF was that we used their study materials and books for coursework. Unfortunately I was really interested in training and wanted to pursue certification.

I did my own research and found that the NCSF exam is one of the hardest and, though newer, a very highly regarded certification. I studied on my own after the class and took the exam several months later. (Though it was the hardest exam I have ever taken, I passed.)

My suggestion to you is to try NCSF, particularly if you're not looking for specific clientele. My university I graduated from had no personal training program in place, so I talked to a few people and I am more or less starting the entire program myself. The reason my boss was so impressed is because of my NCSF certification. So get the materials, consider taking their classes if they're offered in your area, and have fun!
