Best cert for cyclists

by Susan
(Kansas)

I am a cyclist and someone who has always been interested in fitness, health, etc. I have ridden for years and years, riding (road) on average 3000 miles annually.

I want to get my certification as a personal trainer and like any newbie I'm not sure what would be a good cert for me.

I do not want this cert to work in a gym or fitness club, I want it primarily for my own use/knowledge/benefit and secondarily to work with other cyclists (beginning women).

I've looked at most if not all of them, understand the top 3 are from ACSM, NSCA and NASM, but would consider any personal trainer certification, preferably accredited (either through DETC or NCCA) if one particular cert would be better for cyclists.

I know to some this may seem silly to get a cert and not plan to work in a club or something, but I have the time and the resources to do this and I'm looking forward to all that I will learn and can then apply to improve myself as a cyclist and to use with other cyclists down the road (no pun intended) .

Which cert(s) would you recommend and why? I really would appreciate your help.
Thanks!

Hello... Anyone... Beuler... Beuler?
by: Anonymous

I have posted my question to other sites without much luck either. I recognize I’m not the normal CPT candidate and I really don’t know where to turn.

I am very much interested in this certification but am way more interested in what I learn than in the actual certification. As such, I can’t find out enough information about each program’s curriculum to see if it is what I want/need.

For example, I am interested in a CPT program that focuses on exercise physiology and science more than exercise technique. My primary interest/need is cardio and endurance based training/education. Which CPT curriculum do you think focuses on this? I’m wondering about NASM, NSCA-CPT, and ISSA (although I fear their focus is body building), NEST, NFTP?? I have a degree so could go for the NSCA-CSCS but that might be overkill.

I truly care more about what I will learn than the cert. I appreciate any information/help any one can provide.

Thank you,
Susan

For what you are looking for you will benefit most from the CSCS since this is the cert that focuses most on sport performance and if you have the time and money go straight to the most beneficial. The other accredited certs focus more on health, how to personal train, etc.
