Best training for back problems?

by Mike
(Colorado)

I currently have a corporate desk-job career, but am coming to realize that my true path lies in following my passions of health and fitness (I love running an biking, have done several triathlons, and do yoga and much strength training and other gym work for physical and mental well-being; I would love to help others find personal well-being through better health practices).

In particular, almost everyone I know with a corporate desk job has problems with upper or lower back --- when they seek help it is often from a doctor (drugs or surgery), or a Physical Therapist (rehab and minor "stretchy-band" kind of exercises), or a chiropractor ("see me 3 times a week, forever..."); I think the approach of a Personal Trainer is much more beneficial in the long-term for overcoming muscle imbalances and finding true health.

Any advice on a Personal Trainer certification to get to help those with back pain? I have lots of personal experience and background reading on health and fitness but NO EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATIONS for this. I know I would need to be very careful for those in "acute" situations, and work closely with Physical Therapists, etc., and would also like to eventually get a true "yoga alliance 200 hr." certification as well (although it is much more expensive and time-consuming).

I am leaning towards NASM because it seems well-rounded and well-respected, but please let me know if anyone has any perspectives on helping those with back-pain, or with future integration with yoga therapy?

Great web site and great forum!! Thanks so much!
-Mike
