Getting started with NSCA certification

The first certification I did was the ExpertRating certification online for like 50 bucks to get started. I know that's kinda lame, but it gave me a starting point. I was able to get into a small gym and have a couple people that actually paid me for some advice and help.
The next cert I went after was the SCS (Sports Conditioning Specialist) personal trainer certification from NSCA. It helped me target a specific type of client. This was important since I felt more comfortable working with clients that were interested in the same area I was studying.
You need some form of credentialing that you can put on your resume to attract clients. You will be wise to choose an area that you particularly enjoy. It's not necessary to have everything, but I would recommend working on different certs as soon as possible (that's what I am currently doing) so as to be more attractive to clients and develop a good reputation in the way of continuing education.
As for the costs, I am lucky to work at a gym where the owners understand the importance of career development and continuing education and they have been gracious enough to incorporate this into their business model and pay for these classes and certs.
I guess the biggest mistake I made was to put off getting started for so many years because I thought I needed it all to get started. You need to plan to invest in yourself by spending the time it takes to get certified. Remember, you don't have to do it all at once... spread it out over a time that is comfortable and allows you to work and learn and grow at a reasonable pace.
