by Adam
(Canada)

I am a student in high school and i want become a personal trainer after high school. I was wondering what classes you recommend for me to take while I'm still in high school and what courses i should take in college/university that will benefit me the most going into this profession in the future

Hi Adam:

It's great that you're looking into your college education now. I am going back to university to become a trainer (my first two undergraduate degrees are marketing/management and I have a Masters in Business Administration).

If you want to focus on being a trainer, I recommend finding a program that offers a degree in exercise science or kinesiology. (If you're staying in Canada, look into University of Calgary in Alberta. I've seen the campus and it has a very nice training facility.)

If your future goals include owning your own business (as mine do), I highly recommend taking business courses as well. Marketing, Management or entreprenership classes.

While applying to university, make visits to the campuses and talk to your advisors about what your future goals are, as they can direct you as well. Good luck!

Science

I would advise you to take as many hard science and biological sciences as possible. This will be part of a good college curriculum anyway. Human Anatomy and Physiology for sure. Kinesiology to better understand human movement. I would also take physics and any mechanical engineering classes you can get your hands on because, although they are not directly related, they will better help you use the tools (wts. and machines) and principles to apply them correctly to a human body.

Yeah the others are right. A knowledge in the human sciences are very important. Ask lots of questions. But always do your own research of course because you don't want to be misinformed. It's a good idea to get certified in as many fields as possible to make your self more marketable. I don't recommend the crash course seminars it really a waste of money if you have no clue on the material. Will not pass the exam on the third day of the learned material it too much at one time. And it is sort of a waste of money because if you don't pass have to pay additional money out of YOUR pocket.

Ciao

Bliss
