How much business knowledge is required?

Will I need to know a fair amount about business to start my own gym (from scratch)? Will it be pretty basic or will I need a business background to handle it on my own?

Yes, business savvy is the biggest requirement. Not to say you need an MBA, but you need to know what you are doing. Try to make friends with other small business owners in your area, and pick their brains as much as they will let you. Read books, listen to podcasts...whatever you can do to add to your knowledge.
