Personal Trainers are Teachers

by DAC
(Reading Pa )

I am concerned about this list in that many of these only determine the candidate's ability to take a test. How many require teaching skills? I believe that there are very few certifications/organizations that require a teaching component of any sort.

Why is this? Personal Training involves so many teaching techniques to properly identify, assess, and deliver a quality personal training experience? How many of these certifications include the philosophy and practical application of pedagogy whether it is one-to-one, small group, or large group instruction.

How can a test prove the worth of a teacher/trainer?

Where is the Teaching...
by: Anonymous

I think you have a valid point. Most certifications don't educate you on how to be a quality teacher. Each certification has its own style in education; be it Science and Academic driven or "real world" application, yet they don't spend much effort on teaching.

Ok, so you learn that push-ups are good for you and you learn the technique in doing a push-up, you may even have the ability to define the scientific names of the muscles being used, but what about the education to your clients. Do your clients really care about the scientific names of the muscles or how they react to each other, or rather want to be educated to help them change their life.

Agreed- Effective Trainers are Teachers
by: Anonymous

I agree that personal trainers are teachers and what do all effective teachers know? "Sudents" in this case "clients" need to be highly engaged and motivated in order for any learning to occur. If a certification course doesn't focus to some degree on group dynamics, personality theory, and communication skills then it is lacking in its ability to prepare trainers to be effective. If it was all about being good at tests, then every professor with a Ph D in Biomechanics or Exercise Physiology would make the best personal trainer- and I think we all know that isn't the case!
