Should I get the NPTI certification?

by Annie

I am considering attending the National Personal Trainer Institute. They offer an intensive 500 hour course that will take me a year and cost close to $6,000. Is this overdoing it?

After I complete the course I am going to continue obtaining my four year degree in Health & Exercise Science at Rowan. Do you think this course is worth it or should I pursue one of the certification options?

Thank you for your time.

It depends on your objectives
by: Katie - Admin

Your degree program will prepare you to be a personal trainer. However, if you want to work as a trainer before earning your degree, you should get certified.

Since you are getting your degree, much of what you would get from NPTI certification would overlap with your degree program. This might not be a bad thing because you really can't get too much education.

If your objective is to be able to work, you should consider a shorter program like ACE or NASM. You won't have the knowledge or experience you would get from NPTI but they will get you into the workforce quicker. Keep in mind that you won't be a great personal trainer at that point. That only comes with more education and experience.

Good Luck

Not worth it
by: Anonymous

If you're getting your degree in Health and Exercise Science, keep your $5900. You will get way more with a four year education than what you will get at NPTI. Pursue a certification if you want to train before you graduate, many gyms will hire students as long as they are certified.
