The importance of breathing during exercise

by James Dixon
(Washington, DC)

As a certified personal trainer, I realize that the importance of breathing during exercise can improve one's workout as well overall sense of fitness. While I do stress proper form, back & neck alignment, etc..., one thing I try to instill in my clients' is the crucial aspect of breathing during exercise and stretching.

I notice on several occasions, especially when I am with a new client, that many people hold their breath when they exercise and/or stretch. By holding your breath during exercise, you are allowing your blood pressure to go to your head and your muscles cannot relax, which can lead to dizziness, headaches, amongst other things. This is very dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Think about we breathe 24/7 even when we sleep, so why do we feel we don't need to breather when working out. By taking controlled breaths during intense movements, you allow your muscles to open up and relax, which will give you that much more power, speed, endurance, etc.. you need to achieve your results in an efficient and safe manner.
