ACSM study materials for ACE exam?

by Sarah
(New Orleans, LA)

I bought the ACSM study materials (Resources for the Personal Trainer, Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, and The Certification review) about three months ago. I began the studying process and then had to put it on hold when I started a full time job. I still want to get the certification, but I'm thinking about switching to a less labor-intensive exam such as ACE. My question is can the ACSM materials that I bought prepare me for the ACE exam? Or should I just buckle down and study more for ACSM? Thanks for your thoughts.

Preparing for an ACE exam
by: Brian

It is not the most ideal situation to prepare for any certification without the corresponding study materials but if you have to you should be aware of the respective organization exam content outline. AKA the Anatomy of the exam. You can find ACE's on their website at http://www.acefitness.org/getcertified/pdfs/CPT-Exam-Content-Outline.pdf

I would recommend the ACE PT Manual as a minimum purchase. It is actually a better read than the ACSM Manual. ACE does also have other free tools on their site like the exam blog that can help.

Good luck

I was considering doing the same exact thing. I purchased all four of the textbooks for the ACSM exam and have studied for about a month or so with these materials, but found myself getting burnt out pretty quickly. I don't plan on having personal training as my primary job, I would just like to get a certification in order to work while getting educated in physical therapy...

I think that the ACSM and ACE exams overlap quite a bit though, especially since ACSM is more detailed. I think passing the practice test on this website will help tremendously, valuable purchase. I was thinking of just buying the basic ACE PT manual myself, and using their website for extra assistance. I was also planning on shadowing a PT. I keep reading that most of the questions on the ACE exam are related to APPLICATION, so having any sort of background in the fitness realm and having good common sense should get you ahead of the game anyway. From what I'm reading, all of the ACE materials are not necessarily REQUIRED to pass the test, just reccomended.
