Trainer - Instructor
by: Matt

Typically a trainer should not teach a group exercise class unless they have a certification for that as well. It comes down to a liability question - if it can be shown that you were negligent you are liable. The certifications for group ex are easy to get...probably an easier test than you PT exam, depending on who you go with. That said, group ex isn't a big stretch unless it involves complex choreography. I started doing group ex when I got a director position - but hadn't taught any preivously. Get the cert to CYA (the gym should require it if they are smart)

group cert
by: Mike Dee

Most branded gyms (24, bally,Y, ect) have their own group cert program. Ask and they will sensd you. Sometimes they will cover the cost if you are a member. I am currently getting mine via YMCA.

PT's teaching classes
by: Andrea

A personal trainer can most definitely teach group classes, provided they have been certified. I am a PT who also teaches classes and it's a great way of meeting new people who can become potential clients. There is a lot of chat amongst the participants - if you're a great instructor, word will spread across the gym and everyone will know it. And if they know you're a personal trainer, they will seek you out and want to train with you.
You could also recommend classes to your own clients as a form of exercise without having a trainer. It works both ways and I've found success with being a group fitness instructor as well as a personal trainer.
