NSCA cetified home study or NPTI.. what should I do?

I just graduate with a degree in Exercise Science but the emphasis was on Sports Administration. I want to get certified with the NSCA but im not sure if I should go to NPTI or just get the study material and sit for the exam.

Right now I dont have the money to go back to school, but I want to know if NPTI is really worth getting a 6,000 loan out. I have some experience with training but im not sure if It is enough. Ive been talking to some experienced personal trainers that are certified with the NSCA and they have all told me to just study and take the test. Is NPTI more for people that haven't gone to college or dont have background in Exercise Science?

If anyone has been in this situation can you please give me some advice?

If you have a degree in Exercise science, just send for the study materials and take the test. NPTI is not going to teach you much more than you already know. I graduated from NPTI and I still need to study more for the certification exam. And honestly, NPTI isn't that great - Don't waste your money!

NPTI is worth it

I'm a graduate of NPTI, and I learned more about Program Design in 6 months than my 4yrs in Exercise Physiology and Science. this school taught me way more than what we learned in college. Also you start hands on training actual clients day 1

NPTI is the best in all...
by: Sajid

if your looking for real knowledge i would say NPTI, others are good but the difference between NPTI and other certifications is real life practice and home study, home study material will give a lot of knowledge but not the practical experience, NPTI is like your learning and working with your client, last but not least if you can afford the NPTI fee is the best investment in oneself. ALL THE BEST .

i graduated npti but i feel it was a waste of time. NSCA is more recognizeable, there are also other schools u can attend like nfpt or ncsf , dont waste ur time on npti.

*** Editor's Note: The title of this submission is inaccurate and unsubstantiated. But we are publishing it anyway because the author goes on to share their actual experience with NPTI. This site is not affiliated with NPTI in any way. ***

I am a real NPTI student and cannot believe the load of crap on this site. NPTI is a dumbed down watered down version of a homestudy course for the NSCA exam. You pay exactly 10 times more than the home study to hang out with people that no little to no more than you do and be "trained".

I ace every quiz and exam as I am filling in the tremendous blanks with home study. I have hired a personal trainer who is actually a fitness professional to train with and have learnt fantastic techniques. This whole exercise is thousands more than the 6000.00 grand I blew with NPTI.

Do not believe the smoke and mirrors all over the site. Keep your money and do an online course and hire a qualified working fitness professional.

NPTI those that can do - those that can't teach.

Both sides of the coin
by: Anonymous

I studied at the NPTI in Orlando so I can only speak for that location and of the instructor there (Paul Prather). I thought it was well worth the money and a great help toward my Maters in Human Movement, however my undergrad was in exercise and sports management so I did not have the in depth studies associated with the science and practicality of training. I would say if you have no formal education in this field then NPTI is a great start, however if you have a science based degree in the field then you probably have the knowledge needed to home study and pass the test. keep in mind it is not the the name that makes the school it is the instructor you study under, so look at the bios of the instructor and choose your location based on that.

Npti is a rip off
by: Anonymous

I went to Orlando NPTI and it is a waste. The school cares about nothing besides getting that 6000 from you. Its not accepted by most of the fitness industry. Rules are not inforced. Its not even 50 hours but somehow they get away with it. Every day is just a bunch of people working out. You can miss 40 days and still pass. If you go most of the time you pass. You can fail just about every test and still pushed through. Its a total insult to the training industry

clowns
by: JB

I'm currently attending NPTI in Waltham Ma. I have had no real background on fitness prior to this course. The negative comments about NPTI are most likely written by the same clowns who blow off classes, sleep in class when they do come, and never participate in the training workouts. They may get pushed through the class( NPTI will not babysit you) but will not receive there diploma until all the criteria for the course is met. You get out of it what you put into it(cliche I know, but still true). It is true that NPTI is not a certification in itself, but is becoming more and more recognised by the industry as time goes on.(NPTI does offer a A-CPT certification now after completing the course.)
That being said, it is possible that you could pass with the home study as long as you have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology and some practical knowledge sports training.
Good luck

NPTI all the way!
by: Anonymous

I am a graduate of NPTI and have other degrees. I have been very successful and in the field for 2 years now. I work independently and at a major fitness facility. The most succsessful trainers at my gym are NPTI grads. To be honest, most of the trainers that get hired with just exercise science background can't maintain clientele. They do not know all the new up to date stuff. NPTI teaches the actual hands on stuff you need to know not to mention some functional training which is in high demand. If you want to be sucssessful in your career don't waste time or money...go to NPTI. Also, after NPTI I took and sucsessfully completed the NASM credential on the first try which is not easy. Good luck with your decision.

NPTI IS NOT THE WAY
by: Anonymous

FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE BECAUSE I DID ATTEND THE SCHOOL IN ORLANDO. THE SCHOOL IS NOT ACCEPTED EVERYWHERE AND LOOKED DOWN UPON BY A LARGE AMOUNT OF THE INDUSTRY. EVERYONE DOES PASS. SO WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU RIGHT THERE. YOU CAN MISS HALF THE DAYS, DON'T DO HALF THE WORK AND STILL RECEIVE A DIPLOMA AS ANOTHER PERSON HAD WROTE ON HERE. AS LONG AS YOU PAY YOU GET A DIPLOMA. SO WHEN TONS OF STUDENTS WHO GO TRY TO GET JOBS IN THE FIELD AND THE GYM/STUDIO FINDS OUT THEY DON'T KNOW CRAP THE WORD SPREADS THAT NPTI IS NO GOOD. AND THE WORD IS SPREADING. JUST CALL GYMS AROUND YOUR AREA OR OTHER STATES AND YOU WILL SEE. THEY SAY THEY HAVE 30 LOCATIONS BUT MANY HAVE CLASSES WITH 5-10 STUDENTS OUT OF A SMALL STUDIO OR GYM. THAT IS HARDLY A SCHOOL.
